Hooray for Historical Fiction! – Historical fiction books
Hooray for Historical Fiction! is part of Historical fiction books, Historical fiction, Mentor texts, Picture book, History books, Classroom books – I absolutely L O V E Historical Fiction! As I was getting my unit ready, I asked some friends what resources for Historical Fiction they would like to see and the results were The Civil War Immigration to the US World War II and the 1960’s What luck! Those are my favorite time periods to teach about! So I will break down my resources today by time period I start out (obviously) by talking about what historical fiction is and how we will be talking about it Then I begin with a read aloud mentor text There are so many to choose from! Choose one that aligns with the time period you study or just one that you and your kiddos will enjoy Here’s a link I found on Pinterest with some examples As you read, have the kids jot down on sticky notes or in their reading journals what they notice while you are reading With younger students, you can do this together after you read the book Then use their ideas and sort them into things that are real facts about the historical period and which are fictional details the author added to make the story interesting You can also create a timeline of events from the story Once student are familiar with these strategies, they can move on to work in book clubs or independently Here are some other ideas to use with your students Copies of all my anchor charts are provided in the handout below A couple of my friends have great resources to help with teaching Historical Fiction too From Meg has this great Book Study Unit that you can use with any Historical Fiction book And Jen Bengel has these great grade level aligned resources Here is a link I found with awesome picture prompts for writing about historical fiction READ WRITE THINK also has some great lessons!
